What I’m Doing Now

Updated: 2026-08-07

Preaching & Teaching

I am about to embark on a series through the book of Ecclesiastes. I have never preached through this book, and I am simultaneously giddy and doubting my sanity. Giddy, because it pulls together so many important threads that I love to think and write about. The lurking doubt stems from my dread of dragging the church through 15 weeks of existential angst or preaching the same sermon 15 times, all with slight variations upon “This world will never satisfy, but Jesus will.”

Time will tell how my decision ages. But ultimately, all is vanity.

I will also continue teaching through our Confession of Faith (2LCF) during our Sunday School hour, with an upcoming series on Discipleship in the fall.

Reading

There are a few books or authors in constant rotation, the faithful voices that I love to return to. Currently, I am rereading Princeton and Preaching by James Garreston. I also picked up a copy of The Peter Martyr Vermigli Reader that Davenant Press put out.

This has also been the summer of Agatha Christie. Having never read her, I have plowed through 4 or 5 of her mysteries. I’m a fan.

The reading stack also includes:

  • The Iliad
  • John Adams by David McCullough (I may give up on this one)
  • Perelandra by C.S. Lewis (the fam is reading through the Ransom Trilogy)

Family

The Lord continues to be wonderfully kind to us. JW graduated from Providence Christian College last spring (RIP) and will begin law school in the fall. KW is living in SoCal, certified as a doula and working full time for a pro-life medical clinic. NW will be starting her senior year. FW is devouring books and dancing through life.

July brought 3 weeks of vacation where all 7 of us spent a week at Lake Tahoe, then Annie & I adventured to the Caribbean, spending 5 days in Jamaica. The time away was wonderfully relaxing and full of sun, books, card games, movies, fly fishing, pipe tobacco, and naps. Truly, the Lord is good in all his ways.

Hat tip to Derek Sivers for the idea of a “Now” page. I’m not on social media, so this serves as a small way to stay connected through occasional updates, like I would when catching up with an old friend.
